August 18, 2003 - On the first day of AFGE's four-day national
convention, National Secretary Treasurer Jim Davis announced an opportunity to
show solidarity and seek support against President Bush's efforts to privatize
some government offices by joining a picket line at the Aladdin Hotel-Casino.
Mr. Davis stated the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 would be picketing
outside the Aladdin Hotel-Casino on the Las Vegas Strip that afternoon.
The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 was calling attention to an
ongoing dispute with the Aladdin and escalating their campaign to win
representation. Seeking to represent about 1,500 of the hotel's approximately
2,300 employees, they want authorization to represent employees through a "card
count" process of gathering signatures on cards selecting the union as a
bargaining agent. The Aladdin is in the process of being bought out of
bankruptcy and the new owners have said they would retain all employees at
their existing salary rates, they have not commented on union representation
efforts. The Culinary Union sponsored a demonstration led by the Rev. Jesse
Jackson on July 23 and promised additional actions if Aladdin's management did
not acknowledge the union.
AFGE National provided buses, water, hats,
small flags and fans. Patty Petry and Tim Oravec counted 15 buses filled to
capacity (approximately 825 individuals) and the 111 degree heat didn't stop
them and others from chanting and walking the line for over an hour. The
majority of AFGE delegates held green and white Culinary Workers signs though
some carried AFGE signs. The Nevada Department of Transportation warned
motorists of possible traffic disruptions on the Strip between 4 and 7
p.m. by Patty Petry (via Vegas newspapers/Nat'l AFGE) |
